Firstly i am going to start off with ways to advertise a blog because this is what i am most familiar with. Blogging is as big on the internet as ever and is different to websites in the way that people follow them. People can get interested in what you are writing about or can like your writing style but even if you have the best of both if people can’t find it it’s no good. On way in which people look for blogs is on blog submission websites. One of the best ones is Technorati. It has a strict submission service which should mean that people trust the source more. some more of these are blogtoplist, Bloguniverse and Blogsubmissionservice. These are but a few of many but it will get you started in the blogging community.

One very important thing which you must do when writing a blog is to ping it. You can do this through sites like Pingomatic and this shows people that you have fresh content on your blog. If you are using the hosting service wordpress for your blog you’re lucky because it will ping your posts for you.

Also if you haven’t already set up a feed for your blog. This allows people who want to look at several blogs to see your posts and see if they are interested in what you have to say at a glance rather than having to go to your website. This isn’t strictly advertising but once it gets going it should bring in more readers. You can use websites like Feedburner to do this quite easily.

Lets move on to websites now. The best possible way to advertise your website is on other people’s websites so although it is time consuming, writing to people and asking if you can do a link exchange. This puts the name of your website on other websites in the same niche and also helps with search engine optimization.

One of the best ways to advertise is through google adwords. This allows you to pay to put an advert at the side of particular google searches and when people click on those you pay but you get a visit. doing this however can be risky because it can use up more money than it brings so i would only recommend this for websites which have something direct to sell so that you can do your best to make your money back. I would only recommend doing this when you have a direct product to sell on the website or you have created a substantial brand. This is because i can cost a lot of money per click especially in expensive niches so you will need a direct money making method (sales page, e-mail sign up, etc.) to get a good enough conversion rate to make a nice profit.
