In the United Kingdom and all over the world, the cost of motoring seems to be permanently on the increase and the trend looks set to continue for many years to come. The retail price of petrol or diesel occasionally seems to take on a life of its own, with both the oil producers and the government keen to exploit the motorist as often and for as much as possible. A look at the prices listed on the signs outside filling stations is sometimes enough to make you want to stay at home.
And with the almost annual rises in road tax and the often extortionate prices charged for repairs, it seems the poor driver’s pocket is constantly under attack. However, before you trade in your family saloon for a pushbike and rent your garage out to the homeless, you should start looking for ways to reduce your road-related spending. Thankfully for the beleaguered motorist, there are plenty of online sources of information on ways to keep the costs of driving to a bare minimum.
Less fuel consumption, less spending
Perhaps the most obvious item to look at is the best methods of driving economically. There are several websites dedicated to this subject, many of which are hosted by organisations with a keen interest in protecting the environment. In most cases, greener motoring is also cheaper motoring, so it makes sense to garner as much information from these web pages.
But saving money on road use isn’t just about changing the way you drive, of course. If you work in a major town or city, it would be wise to get involved in a car-share scheme as soon as possible. Finding someone else who lives where you live and works where you work can immediately halve the cost of commuting, so it’s always worth getting involved. And if you managed to find four of you, your annual consumption of fuel would be reduced dramatically just by going online and looking for others.
Is parking an issue?
With the rising costs of bus and train travel, owning a car (and using it wisely) could still be the most economical option. If you work in the city, you may also have to factor in the cost of parking as well, although you may have your own parking space if you’re lucky enough to work in a purpose-built serviced office. London isn’t overly endowed with affordable car parks, so this is an issue that is worthy of consideration.
It goes without saying that one of the best ways to reduce spending on cars is to work closer to home. This isn’t always possible, of course, but all over the UK there are new developments taking shape which will offer exciting jobs in luxurious surroundings. If you’re serious about keeping your costs down, it might be worth thinking about a change of scenery in the coming months.
And when the time comes to replace your existing car, it may be more sensible to lease a vehicle rather than buy one outright. The most beneficial option will depend on your own individual circumstances, of course, but as always the web is on hand to provide you with all the information you’ll need to make a decision. There are several sites dedicated to explaining the pros and cons of a lease deal, so be sure to check the Internet before putting pen to paper.
David Rice is a UK writer with a keen interest in reducing the costs of motoring. After a recent relocation to a brand new serviced office London is now his place of work.
