When I first started out trying to use social media to market my content on the internet I had no idea what I was doing. All the blog posts I read seemed to tell me that all you had to do was get more followers and then post my content to them. I tried that to start with but it was such a slow trickle that I decided that there had to be something better than this so I decided to do a experimenting and see what I could do about it. I found out a few things along the way that will get you more visitors, likes, tweets and stumbles and here they are.
Post Links to Your Posts In Facebook Groups/Pages
A great tactic you can use is to simply do a search on Facebook for any groups or pages that are related to the topic that you have just written about and then post the link to your post on the wall. With the new Facebook rules anything that is posted on the wall of a page will show up on all of the fans walls so it has the potential to be seen by several people instantly. Depending on how catchy your title is you should get some visitors from that straight away but most importantly it should get you quite a few ‘likes’ within the first hour (quite a few people like without reading!) This means that your link is posted to all of their friends giving it more chance to be seen by more people. Another good thing about getting likes is that when people see that on your post it gives some social proof to your content, in other words it shows visitors that other people like it.
Tweet Your Post Several Times In The Day
Always a good idea to tweet your post to your followers once you have written it but there is no way to know which of your readers are online at that time. If you tweet your content at a couple of hour intervals throughout the day then you are much more likely to get it seen by all of your followers that use twitter to find out about you. Be careful with this tactic though because some people will think you are spamming them if you tweet about the same thing to much. I would recommend tweeting about maximum of 5 times in a day on the same topic.
Use A Question Instead Of Just Tweeting Your Post Title
If you ask people questions about their experiences then it is much more likely that they will feel involved with what you are writing. If you simply post your blog title people have the chance to
skip over it after reading but if you say something as simple as ‘what do you think of …..?’ Then they will subconsciously answer the question in their minds. This means that they have engaged more with what you had to say and processed it. If they have an opinion about the topic then they are more likely to get involved in sharing or talking about your post rather than skipping it.
Stumble And Tweet Other Peoples Content Not Just Your Own
Ok this one isn’t about promoting your own post but I’ll show you how it will help you in the future with promoting each and every post. Tweeting other peoples content other than your own shows all of your followers that you are interested in furthering their knowledge of your topic more than just promoting your own content. If your readers feel you are genuinely there to help them then they will keep looking at what you have to say.
Also if you stumble other peoples content it has the same effect as it does on Twitter but more than that it actually strengthens your Stumbleupon account. What I mean by this is if you find content that no one has stumbled before and then you stumble it and it gets seen, your account will have more power in future to get more views from each submission. This will help you if you need to stumble your own content which brings me to my next point….
Stumbling Yourself Is Good, Other People Stumbling Is Better
With Stumbleupon you really want other people to be stumbling your content because if any of the viewers check who originally stumbled the content they will see it was you and not someone who genuinely enjoyed the content and thought it worth sharing. If however your blog is in the early stages and doesn’t have the viewers to wait for someone else to stumble your content then you should submit it yourself. Its not going to do you any good waiting for someone else to do it if you don’t get enough traffic, it has to be submitted before it can be seen. That is why I advise you ‘strengthen’ your Stumbleupon account for your own use.
These tips are designed so that you can get some exposure to your blog posts and things that you can do right now to circulate your content. Can you think of any more practical tips that you can implement straight away after posting your content? What have your results been from using these methods?

Reading through your post made me realise just how much I neglect StumbleUpon. I’m going to Stumble this post right now because it will help a few people out there.
Hi John,
Just read your guest post at Daily Blog Tips, so thought I would stop by your site and have a look around.
I have heard so much about social media and have really been struggling to not only understand it but implement it also.
Thanks for these tips, trying to get followers has been a big issue for me, so maybe if I try some of your tactics I may see better results.
Cheers
