If you have even glanced at the internet then you will know about Google but for those of you who are quite new to this you might not know about google adsense. Just for those who have never heard of it i’ll give you a quick description. This is a program where you can put adverts onto your website and when people click on those adverts you will get a little bit of money, the more clicks the more money. It really is quite simple.
Now when you are looking to make money from your adsense account there are really only 3 things you need to consider. How many people are seeing the adverts (this is the most important), where your adverts are placed on your page and what your adverts look like. In this article i am not going to talk about how to get traffic to your adverts because i’ve written about getting traffic in loads of other posts so check them out if you’re looking for traffic tips. What i am going to help you with is the other two issues.
Firstly where to place your adsense ads. Now the first instinct i know is to plaster adverts all over you page employing the philosophy that ‘the more adverts there are the more clicks i will get’. Now that might be true, you might get a higher click through rate (the percentage of clicks to page views) but you won’t get more clicks. The problem with this is that you will probably put people off your site the moment they come on it if they feel visually abused by adverts. Placing adverts on a website is a bit like when you buy a car, you want a mixture of sytle and substance (depending on what kind of person you are!). What i have found works best is adverts at the top of a post (if you are a blogger), visitors are quite used to this now so they won’t get put off and everyone who wants to read your content will see them. Also you can have a few on the website home page but not to many. Also i find that any more than 1 or 2 moving adverts is a little offensive on the eyes. Save the header of your website for banners because these don’t have the best click through rate but these places are real estate gold when it comes to adverts. Save that space for your own products or affiliate products. When you’ve got a website with enough traffic you can also sell this space to private advertisers. Also at the bottom of the page can be a nice idea so that when people are finnished with your content they can have somewhere else to go.
Now we come to how adverts look. You want your advert to look ‘perfect’. In the advertising world the ‘perfect’ advert is the one which gets the most click throughs. The best thing to do to make them look natural is to blend them to your website. By this i mean matching the colours in so that they look as though they’re part of your content. This makes them look more like part of your website rather than being separate, like most internet savvy people see them as. A good tip i think is to put the adsense advert type, which looks like a horzontal menu, near the top of your website where you think your actual menu should go. A slightly sneeky trick but you can get a good conversion rate on them because people click on it mistaking it for your actual menu.
